HMC has an outstanding opp! ortunity for a Medical Assistant . Under general supervision, ! the Outpatient Float Pool Medical Assistant (MA) will assist the medical and nursing staff by performing delegated tasks that involve direct patient care; technical procedures or monitoring that may be invasive and require skills validations; transportation of patients, supplies and specimens; ordering and stocking of supplies; and maintenance of special equipment, including sterile equipment and set-ups. The MA role may include coordinating the clerical activities and supporting the front desk activities for patient care in the clinic. Participate in clinic and selected divisional activities to promote effective problem solving and communication.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POSITION:

  • Float to clinics to provide patient care activities.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in accepting assignments.
  • Ensure completion of clinic associated tasks by end of day to include all
documentation requirements and any necessary ! reports to core staff.

  • Maintain level of knowledge to function effectively in all AACS clinics oriented to.
  • Facilitate communication with clinic RN3/Charge RN regarding changes in clinic
processes.

  • Support HMC and clinic specific processes regarding patient flow and procedures
  • Work within established clinic specific processes regarding lunch and break times.
  • Report to clinic assignment by 8AM.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, in-services and training
opportunities.

  • Complete timesheet in a timely fashion to include hours and budget numbers.
  • Maintain professional attire by wearing ID tag and carrying assigned pager during work hours.
  • Notify Staffing Office of illness by 7AM of sick day.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES - CLINIC FLOW ACTIVITIES:
  • Ensure exam rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients.
  • Maintain and use supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
  • Prepare medical record for clinic visit. Request existing records and x-rays as necessary.
  • Assist provider by facilitating use of technology including EMR (electronic medical records).
  • Coordinate communication flow in the clinic including answering and directing telephone inquiries to the appropriate individual.
  • Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge.
  • Take initiative to maintain patient flow for assigned providers/team.
  • Transport patients and laboratory specimens.
  • Complete billing documents as appropriate.
  • Schedule appointments for patients.
PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES:
  • Prepare patient for examination by the provider. Observe and document the patient’s physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the medical record, recognize and repor! t symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse.
  • Perform delegated patient care activities in accordance with established standards of practice.
  • Assist during patient examinations and procedures performed by health care professionals.
  • May withdraw venous and capillary blood after completion of a competency skills check.
  • May administer injectable medications in compliance with WA State Department of Health after successfully completing the ACS study module and competency skills checklist.
CUSTOMER SERVICE AND TEAM BEHAVIORS:
  • Greet patients and families.
  • Review patient needs with providers daily, preferably at the start of each day or
session.

  • Advocate for the patient/family by locating appropriate staff to address concerns
  • Appropriately directs patients and others to other departments across the medical
center.

  • Demonstrat! e an atmosphere/attitude of respect for human dignity and the uniquenes! s of
each person encountered in the clinic setting.

  • Promote and protect general safety for patients/families/friends and co-workers
through adherence to correct procedures, timely communication of messages and test

results, and appropriate consultation.

  • Act promptly and effectively during an emergency situation.
  • Maintain/improve own professional competence, knowledge and skills to meet identified
self-learning needs and annual review requirements.

  • Apply appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice in
performing duties.

  • Support development of clinic and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through
participation in quality assessment and improvement activities.

  • Demonstrate support for clinic and divisional policies and procedures.
  • Promote and contribute to the development of tea! m in clinic and working relationships
between the clinic and other departments/disciplines.

  • Participate in orientation of new staff and preceptorship of MA students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA);

OR

high school graduation or equivalent AND one year of experience providing direct patient care in a health care setting

OR

equivalent education/experience.

ADDITIONAL DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be certified as an MA or have Interim status

DESIRED:
Energetic and extremely flexible individual who has ex! perience with floating to multiple clinic environments; able to perform! phlebotomy, EKGs, clinic flow and administering injections/immunizations
