Public Health Nurse 1 - PHN1
The dispensing nurse will be responsible for the daily dispensing of medication as directed by the Medical Director, Clinical Manager, or Administrator. The dispensing nurse will follow the essential functions and basic duties of the clinic and will participate in the weekly staffing for the care and function of the OTP patient. Backup for Tuberculosis program as needed.
- Assist in opening and closing of dispensary clinic. Appropriately dispenses Methadone, Buprenorphine/Naloxone, Buprenorphine, Naltrexone and other medications such as Antabuse to registered patients as required.
- Complete Jail dosing when needed, by walking to the jail to dispense a dose to individuals.
- Accounts for and accurately records all Methadone, Buprenorphine/Naloxone, Buprenorphine, and Naltrexone dispensed. Records and accounts all Methadone, Buprenorphine/Naloxone, Buprenorphine, Naltrexone received and dispensed.
- Order Methadone, Buprenorphine/Naloxone, Naltrexone, Buprenorphine or and maintain an adequate supply to meet demands including adjustment for emergencies
- Utilizes medical judgment during the stabilization process and during daily dispensing to ensure patients are utilizing medications properly and appropriately. Informs Medical Director, Clinical Mana ger, OTP ARNP, Program Administrator, Counselors and Program Manager as necessary on patient care.
- Monitors all patients (with special attention to stabilizing, detoxifying and pregnant patients) during dispensing to ensure they are using medication properly and assists with any observable health problems. Observes patient random urine sample specimen collection when needed on an emergency basis.
- Input medication order changes in computer (i.e. dose change, care plans, dose holds,holidays, etc.).
- Perform venipuncture for blood work for individuals and package specimens for lab pick-up or mailing to lab, per biohazard standards.
- Performs EKG’s on individuals on the program along with vitals.
- Monitors prescription medication with pill counts. Communicates closely with prescribing practitioner. Notifies team when medications are not being used as prescribed.
- Participate in weekly case staffing with Treatment Team members.< /li>
- Insure adequate supplies are procured as required and advises the Clinical Manager/Division Director as to any additional needed equipment.
- Provides medication information services to area hospitals and jail in case patients are hospitalized or incarcerated.
- Verify last dose and amount of last dose for courtesy dosers when needed.
- Participate in Quality Improvement and Logic Models for program evaluation.
- Maintain HIPAA and 42 C.F.R. Part 2 Confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications:
- AA/AAS, Diploma or B.S.N
Required Experience:
- Graduation from accredited professional school of nursing.
Desired Education, Experience and Skills:
- Previous experience with substance abuse patients helpful. Experience working with diverse populations. Ability to work flexible hours. Ability to communicate and interact with other medical professionals regardi ng patient’s involvement on Methadone or Buprenorphine/Naloxone program and interaction with other prescribed medications.
Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Current Washington State Registered Nurse Credential
Required Immunizations:
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
- Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
- Varicella (Chicken Pox)
- Hepatitis B
- Influenza
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- De-escalation skills
- Knowledge and skills relating to substance abusing patients
- Ability and willingness to learn computerized medication dispensing specific to Methadone or Buprenorphine/Naloxone clinic
- Basic keyboarding skills
Environmental Factors:
- Indoors, sedentary with up to 6-8 hrs./day sitting or standing
- 5-6 hrs./day typing/keyboarding
- Communication skills to interact effectively w ith people
- Comprehend and process verbal communication
- Ability to discern odors
- Visual acuity to read small print
- Must be able to bend, twist and stoop, and lift/carry up to 25 lbs. on an occasional basis
