AREA OF ASSIGNMENT:

HOURS OF WORK:
Generally Monday-Friday; hours vary (evening, nights or weekend hours required occasionally).
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Director, Nursing Development and Informatics
PREREQUISITES:
Masterâs or higher degree in nursing from an accredited (NLNAC or CCNE) educational institution in a curriculum that specifically prepares the student for a CNS role.
RN
with an active/unrestricted license to practice in WA State.
Current BLS certified! .
Nationally certified as a clinical nurse specialist! .
Minimum of three yearsâ experience in
acute medical
nursing.
Able to use word processing, graphic and database computer programs, and email.
Evidence of excellent communication and training skills.
Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English language.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of adult learning principles and change management.
Experience with staff development and training.
Experience with evidence-based practice and standards development.
Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional development of all ages served.
Able to organize and prioritize duties effectively, while handling multiple demands in a rapidly changing environment.
Experience with RN residencies, preferred.
Able to effectively collaborate with various stakeholders, at all levels, within a multidisciplinary team environ! ment.

Unique Job Functions
CNS spheres of influence include patient/family, nurses/nursing, and systems within their specialty service area. As a member of the Nursing Development department, participates in hospital wide initiatives and collaborates with peers in the department on various projects and initiatives.
Patient/Family
Able to evaluate care for the patients and families in specialty area, and when that patient is located elsewhere in the hospital; serve as support to the nursing staff in care delivery specific to the medical/acute care patient.
Demonstrate continuing clinical competence in specialty area through certification maintenance, continuing education, and clinical pract! ice.
Monitor and enhance clinical care provided to patients.
Collaborate with medical staff, nurses and others in the care of individual patients and groups.
Nurses/Nursing
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate clinical education strategies and programs in specialty area.
In collaboration with key stakeholders, develop, implement and evaluate an annual educational calendar of events for nursing staff, based on data and information relevant to the patientâs and staff in the service area.
Collaborate with other content experts to maintain staff clinical competency within the service area.
Provide clinical consultation for complex patients to the staff in area of specialty.
Design, coordinate and evaluate unit specific orientation programs for new nursing staff in the service area; will participate in selected training/education programs for staff nurses in other areas of the hospital.
In collaboration with unit managers, staff nurses and others, facilitate learnin! g experiences for nursing students and medical residents.
Provide leadership for development of evidence-based policy, procedure, and protocol within the service area.
Provide input to the service area managers in developing operational budget and cost-benefit analyses for educational and other programs.
Initiate and/or participate in research projects.
Promote national practice standards from professional and specialty organizations.
Mentor nursing staff in their professional development and serve as a role model with the highest level of professional practice and behavior.
Systems/Hospital
Participate in the development of new programs to improve patient care both in the service area and the hospital.
Participate with peers in the department on hospital wide initiatives; attends Nursing Development department staff meetings.
Collaborate effectively with medical staff and department members at! all levels in the service area and beyond.
Apply evidence-bas! ed practice to enhance and broaden the scope of clinical practice and assist with implementation of practice changes.
Coordinate selection and evaluation of new products and devices in specialty area.
Participate in unit based committees, staff meetings and other groups in the service area on patient care or staff development projects.
Participate in quality improvement processes.
Demonstrate leadership and âmanaging upâ in the promotion of system-wide and service area changes.
Serve on appropriate committees and advisory boards in the hospital and in community.
