PVH has served the Pacific NW as a full service, mixed animal pract! ice since 1963. With over 20 doctors and staff of 75, we provide professional veterinary care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
We are currently seeking full time experienced Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) for our Small Animal Day Practice.
Schedule: Days will vary within Monday - Friday, along with every other Saturday. Hours will be between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. 4 10 hour days each week.
JOB SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the position is to provide veterinary assistance and nursing care to small animals under the direction of the DVMs on duty and conduct a variety of technical duties relevant to being an integral part of a veterinary medical team in the operation of the facility. Secondary to this duty is to provide for the basic needs of animals that are patients of Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital, and care for them as instructed. Some responsibilities will vary depending on the current needs of the hospital and the ! time of year. A Licensed Veterinary Technician must be able to! perform recurring assignments independently (while also referring any deviations or unfamiliar situations to the DVM on duty) and mentor other team members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES to be completed under the supervision of a licensed DVM:
- Triage and/or admit emergency patients and give appropriate nursing care.
- Perform physical exams according to PVH procedures and protocols.
- Prepare patients and assist with procedures, including placing IV catheters and inducing/monitoring anesthesia.
- Provide client education and counsel clients regarding the various after-patient care procedures.
- Fill take-home prescriptions as directed by the veterinarian and in accordance with state regulations.
- Complete tasks, as assigned, in accord with WSVMA's "Animal Health Care Tasks" for Licensed Technicians (attached).
- Assist the veterinarians with other tasks, as assigned, specific to each department. !
- Safely restrain dogs and cats for various medical procedures.
- Perform medical calculations and administrations.
- Lab training as applicable or requested by Supervisor.
- Observe and report animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent to the veterinarian(s) for any animals.
- Perform needed cleaning and maintenance of all equipment and instruments used in the department/job.
- Feed each animal as instructed and record appetites; keep dish washing area sterile, clean and neat.
- Give baths (ordinary cleansing) and grooming as may be necessary to the treatment and constant cleanliness of each animal.
- Clean and keep stocked all treatment areas, exam rooms, suites and kennels.
- Assist Veterinary Assistant IIIs and provide them with support in learning about PVH policies ! and procedures.
- Answering phone calls with client concerns, pr! escription refills, appointment scheduling.
- Handling monetary transactions with clients.
- Participate in on-call, holiday, community events and monthly meetings.
- Must have basic knowledge and understanding of all tasks on WSVMA's "Animal Health Care Tasks" for Licensed Technicians.
- Must be familiar with animal anatomy, diseases, behavior and care.
- Must be able to learn about a variety of equipment and use with skill and efficiency.
- Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written directions, keep accurate written records, and know safety protocols.
- Must be familiar with the administration of medications and recognize abnormal conditions.
- Must understand aseptic technique, sterile prep, and equipment identification and maintenance.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Basic knowledge of clien! t education including patient intake, phone consultations and patient discharge.
- Critical Care experience is preferred.
- Possess a two-year degree by an accredited veterinary technician program, and have passed the VTNE, or have satisfied the prerequisites to challenge the VTNE (i.e. be qualified under the "Grandfather Clause") and have passed the test.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician's License required.
- Willing to learn new skills and work as directed with some supervision.
- Often requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 40 lbs as well as handling of materials of up to 20 lbs. Additionally requires handling dogs weighing up to 150 lbs.
- Capable of walking and/or standing for long periods as well as frequently working in a bent position.
- May be required to use strength and/or agility ! in walking and restraining stronger, more active animals.
- Work is normally performed inside; some outside work is required.
- Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises as well as bites, scratches and animal wastes.
