The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in labo! ratory medicine. Our La! boratory Medicine department has an outstanding opportunity fo! r a Full-Time Clinical Laboratory Technician - 1 in Transfusion Support Services . TSS manages approximately 45,000 blood components annually. This individual plays an important role in patient care. The position provides the opportunity to work in a fast paced environment, with a balance of the laboratory and a clinical environment.
Primary Job Responsibilities :
Manage orders for all blood components including receiving and sending orders and issuing blood components to patient care areas.
Maintains calm in stressful situations. Ability to think clearly in urgent situations. Respond quickly and efficiently, especially for patients with bleeding emergencies.
Issue appropriate blood components for emergent use. Follow guidelines for issuing uncrossmatched or stock products.
Thaw Plasma and Cryoprecipitate as needed. Process Red Blood Cells and Platelets for distribution to patient care areas.
Monitor patient samples fo! r appropriate labeling and patient identification. Notify patient care areas when samples do not follow such requirements.
Perform the initial handling of patient specimens for diagnostic testing, sort, prioritize and match specimens against requisitions for appropriate sample type.
Complete computer entry of patient information and tests requested.
Maintains equipment, logs and records as required by Regulatory agencies, Puget Sound Blood Center and Standard Operating Procedures.
Performs computer functions that allow blood product tracking and billing.
Assist patient care staff with questions regarding sample types, labeling, placing orders, track orders, and follow-up on problems.
Work with the Nurse Coordinator, Support Manager and Director of Medical Transfusion Services to facilitate ordering and issuing blood components.
Performs other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience OR completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists OR equivalent education/experience.
DESIRED:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; basic knowledge of computers and word processing; strong customer service focused approach.
Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
Ability to work in a diverse and team environment.
Condition of Employment:
Initial schedule hours or days may change when TSS staffing is finalized.
Weekend and Holiday rotations are required.
This position can be stressful in trauma situations when there is an urgent need for blood com! ponents.
Transfusion Support Services may be warm and noisy at times.
The majority of the time will be spent within the laboratory; a combination of sitting and standing will be required. Some time may be spent within patient care areas. An ability to move quickly between two floors, as well as within the laboratory, is needed.
Use of computers is requisite.
Occasional handling and cleanup of non-intact blood components will be required, as well as wiping and placement of bloody samples into biohazard bags.
Employees working in Laboratory Medicine may be required to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, i.e. UWMC, HMC, CHRMC, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, SCCA, Roosevelt, Rosen, etc.
