Kaiser Permanente nurses advance the art and science of nursing in a patient-centered healing environment through their professional practice and leadership. Mental health RN's provide regional support to the Mental Health Department prescriber team members in OR and WA as assigned geographically, regionally, by population or per specialty area below. The Advise RN and the Case Management RN are two distinct and separate roles. Mental Health RNs perform distinct and separate duties as referenced above. All mental Health RN's are cross trained and oriented to the duties of Advice RN and RN Case Management prior to being assigned to work. Cross training and competency ensure we maintain safe and efficient workflows. Mental Health RNs may be assigned to perform urgent or pre-planned coverage of another area in their daily work schedule by the nurse manager or designee. or departments goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Strengthen the linkage between the assigned MH Prescriber team and members by responding to patient messages related to psychotropic medication problems, questions, or routine reports; concerns about mood or behavior; questions regarding lab results; or other urgent issue that fall within the nursing scope. Assess and evaluate patients based on the DSM IV, providing telephone advice independently and within scope of the Oregon and Washington Nursing Practice Act. Triage patients as needed.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding side effects and efficacy of psychotropic medications and behavioral management.
  • Facilitate care coordination with the patient's psychiatrist, primary care provider, other treating providers, lab, pharmacy, and others as needed.
  • Assist their assigned MH team in hospitalization of patients which include: search for available beds, arrangement of transportation and ----follow to ensure transfers occurred successfully. •Future goals include development of partnership with EPS to arrange hospitalization of members
  • Assist patients in crisis, patients stepping down from inpatient or residential programs into low levels of care either by telephone or in person.
  • All MH RN are cross trained in Advice /Triage and Case Management roles and responsibilities.
  • MHRN's support the Mental Health Department goals and the members recovery through the continuum of care. Current goals include: increase access to services, increase member satisfaction, provide transitional support for Mental Health members, and ensure continuity of care for high risk members at various levels of care such as inpatient hospitalization, residential care, outpatient programs and community supports.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years RN experience to include 1 year of medical/surgical (preferred) and 3 years (at 32 hrs per week or more) in Mental Health within the last 10 years
  • Minimum of 6 months nursing phone/triage experience
  • Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing
  • Requires license in primary state, (Oregon or Washington) prior to first day of employment. Application for licensure in secondary state must be made within four (4) weeks of start date. Licenses in both states required within six (6) months of hire
  • Current BLS w/AED certification
  • Able to type 20 words per minute
  • Board-based knowledge of Mental Health diagnoses and treatment, including psychotropic medications, and associated lab monitoring
  • Knowledge of contributory and/or co-existing diagnoses such as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, eating disorders, and chemical dependency
  • Skill and ability to assess suicidality, lethality, and to handle crisis situations
  • Familiarity with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
  • Ability to identify and problem solve issues in a team environment as well as work collaboratively within a team
  • Ability to work independently and maintain professional, respectful and supportive communication to patients/members and others
  • Willingness to learn computerized information systems
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's of Nursing degree or board certification as Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse
  • 3 years work experience in community based mental health treatment and care coordination or inpatient mental health facility
  • 2 years work experience within mental health treatment team
  • Previous case management and/or care coordination experience within a managed care system
Salary Range:
$32.45 - $46.67
